Adrenal Fatigue Checklist:  Assessing Your Energy and Health

Adrenal fatigue has now become a common term.

But, what does it really mean?

Your adrenals are small organs that sit near your kidneys and one of their jobs is to manage your stress.  Such busy little organs, pumping out stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol when needed, managing other hormones, keeping you alert and focused, overseeing your daily biorhythms.  Phew!  You’d think they would get tired, but are they really?

Adrenal fatigue refers to a group of symptoms and body system dysregulations that can include hormones, mood, immune, digestion, cognitive function, and many more.

Sometimes, it’s called burnout.

It’s a matter of determining what’s driving your fatigue, and your adrenal function is a good place to start.

It could be the real problem behind how you’re feeling, your relentless fatigue, foggy brain, weight gain, anxiousness, digestive complaints and more.

I’ve been there and I can remember that bone weary fatigue that never goes away, even after 12 hours of sleep, the anxiousness for no apparent reason, the lethargy and brain fog.

It’s there, day after day.

I’ve lived with the frustration and fear of not being able to get answers to why I feel so low from the GP, why blood test results show I’m “normal”, why nothing I do makes any difference.

I’ve put together a checklist for you to see if your adrenals could be behind your health struggles, your fatigue or draining your vitality.

Read through this list and if you are experiencing even as little as a quarter of these symptoms, it’s time to have a close look at your adrenals.  I can do this using pathology testing to be sure but this is a guide to get you thinking.

Adrenal fatigue checklist

Are you:

  • feeling anxious for no reason
  • overwhelmed at normal tasks
  • tired all the time
  • feeling “wired” and can’t get to sleep
  • getting a second wind at night after being exhausted during the day
  • finding it hard to get up and going in the morning
  • sleeping too much but still exhausted
  • carrying around stubbon belly fat
  • dealing with an auto immune condition
  • craving salty foods
  • finding an increased effort just to get through the day
  • experiencing low blood pressure
  • or high blood pressure
  • dealing with hormone issues
  • noticing a lack of sex drive
  • putting up with a poor immune system
  • experiencing low moods
  • not handling stress like you used to
  • dealing with digestive issues like ongoing diarrhoea or constipation
  • having trouble with concentration
  • less productive at work
  • finding it difficult to make decisions
  • feeling that life just feels so hard

Do any of these sound familiar?

Stress is a condition that is very much recognised these days.

Did you know that it comes in 3 stages:

Stage 1 – the alarm stage which should last a few hours/days or a couple of months and then everything settles back to normal

Stage 2 – the resistance stage where your body is trying hard to adapt to ongoing stress.  This can last months/years and cause all sorts of symptoms

Stage 3 – the exhaustion stage where your adrenals really give up and health conditions get considerably worse.

It’s so much easier to recover from fatigue in the earlier stages.  If you wait until exhaustion really sets in, then recovery is a long road back.

Where to next?

  1. Recognising where you are physically, emotionally and mentally is the first step.
  2. Be kind to yourself.  You’re not alone or going crazy.  If you ask around, many women are exactly where you’re at.
  3. Look at what’s causing you stress.  Where can you create change?  Outsource?  Incorporate relaxation on a regular basis?  Be mindful?  Put aside time for caring for yourself?
