5 Quick Morning Routines to Start Your Day

Morning routines are the best way to start your day.  But, most people think routines are boring.

If you think that repeating the same old thing, day in, day out, is a sure way to drive yourself crazy?  Or to spiral yourself further into feeling less than enthusiastic about the day stretching out in front of you?  Then I’m telling you there is a better way.

Routines – are the building blocks for the new you

When you discover that a morning routine is a building block for the new “you”, it takes on a whole new energy and meaning.

When I’m in overwhelm, my habitual mode is do nothing.  Everything is way too hard.   In that mode, it’s easier to shelve ideas, hide and become inert.

Doing nothing is not helpful for moving forward.

You need a daily reset button for forward momentum

The number one action to get me back on track, is my daily routine.  It’s my daily reset button for forward momentum.  This keeps me moving toward my visions and goals.

5 Quick Morning Routines to Start Your Day

Here’s 5 quick and simple morning routines you can easily implement at the beginning of each day to press reset.  You can have a routine of one, two or more actions in a sequence.  Whatever appeals to you:

Breathe

  • three deliberate or mindful breaths on waking, before you get up.  Take a deep breath in through your nose, and breathe out slowly through your mouth, repeat three times.

Cuppa

  • rehydrating first thing in the morning is very important.  So, you can really make a ritual out of this small daily habit – the way you brew your tea, the cup you use, perhaps you have a spoon that’s just right.  You may already be doing this, be it a cup of tea or coffee, a herbal tea, lemon in water, a smoothie or a green juice – turn this into your daily routine.

Daily Intention

  • I like to write my daily intention at the top of my diary each morning.  It helps me to focus on what I want to achieve that day. It can be simple, like –
    • “Today I will be flexible to change if needed”, or
    • “Thank you for every opportunity to learn, love and grow today”, or
    • “Today I will tick 2 things off my list”.

It’s the act of writing that makes it a powerful start to your day.

Journaling

  • a very personal routine, and one that not everyone is drawn to.   However, if you’re put off by the thought of journaling, pick up a motivational book and read a page or two to being your day instead.   Try to sit quietly outside.  Or, perhaps pick a sunny spot near a window where you can see the garden while you drink your morning cuppa.

Organise your diary and your day

  • take 5 minutes to get organised for the day.  I’m a big one for scheduling and making lists.  Just the act of writing them in your diary can help.  Also, being in overwhelm can cause brain fog, so organising your diary first thing can make sure you remember to do things.
    • Tip – if you’re quite overwhelmed, don’t make your lists too long, you’ll only overwhelm yourself even more!  Stick to your top 2 or 3 priority tasks.

Routines make us feel safe and give us certainty – we know exactly what’s coming next. When we’ve built up certainty, we have so much more resilience to cope with the uncertain things that crop up.

Build yourself a daily routine and feel the difference.
