Is Stress Behind Your Ongoing Health Issues?

Is Stress Behind Your Ongoing Health Issues?

We all experience stress. It’s part of life.

A bit of pressure here and there is manageable. In fact, short bursts of stress can sometimes sharpen focus and help you rise to a challenge.

But when stress becomes ongoing, or a sudden event pushes you over the edge, that’s when your body starts to struggle.

Over time, chronic stress can wear you down:

  • your resilience dips
  • your immune system weakens
  • your digestion suffers
  • your sleep is disrupted
  • your mood becomes harder to manage
  • and your energy levels crash.

At the centre of this is cortisol, your primary stress hormone.

In short bursts, cortisol helps keep you alert and ready to respond. But when cortisol stays elevated for too long, it can begin to disrupt nearly every system in the body.

High cortisol can:

  • suppress immune function
  • increase inflammation
  • disturb digestion
  • interfere with sleep
  • trigger anxiety
  • and leave you feeling physically and emotionally exhausted.

In fact, some of the most common health conditions I see in clinic have stress and elevated cortisol at their core.

I know this firsthand.

Back in 2014, I had my first ever bout of shingles. It was debilitating and incredibly painful. But it also opened my eyes to just how much stress I’d been carrying and how deeply it had started affecting my health.

It’s important to treat the immediate symptoms of illness.

But if we don’t address the underlying driver behind the illness, recovery can be slow, incomplete, or only temporary.

Here are six common health conditions linked to chronic stress:

1. Viral Infections That Won’t Go Away

Catching a cold or flu occasionally is normal, especially in winter.  But if you’re constantly fighting viruses, or they keep turning bacterial, it may be a sign your immune system is under pressure.

Ongoing stress can suppress immune function by reducing the activity of T-helper cells, making it harder for your body to fight infections and recover properly.

If you feel like you’re “always sick,” stress may be playing a role.

2. Shingles

The varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox, can lie dormant in your nerve cells for years.  Stress can trigger it to reactivate, causing shingles.

It’s more common in those over 50, but I’m seeing it more often in younger people under prolonged stress.

Think of it like the cold sore virus (herpes simplex) – another virus that flares when your defences are down.

3. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Symptoms like bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, or constipation are often closely linked to stress.

Why?

Your nervous system has two main modes:

  • fight, flight or freeze
  • rest and digest

When stress keeps you stuck in “fight or flight,” digestion slows down.  Over time, this can lead to:

  • sluggish digestion
  • altered gut motility
  • increased gut sensitivity
  • and worsening IBS symptoms.

Your gut and brain are deeply connected.  A stressed mind often creates a stressed gut.

4. Debilitating Fatigue

If you’ve been pushing through stress for too long, fatigue is often your body’s way of saying:  enough!  At first, cortisol keeps you going.  But over time, your stress response can become dysregulated, leaving you feeling:

  • flat
  • unmotivated
  • wired but tired
  • physically depleted.

This is one of the most common complaints I see in women juggling work, family, and the mental load of life.  You can read more about ongoing fatigue in The Fatigue Solution.

5. Insomnia and Broken Sleep

Stress and sleep are closely intertwined.  When cortisol rises at the wrong time, especially at night, it can make it hard to:

  • fall asleep
  • stay asleep
  • or wake feeling refreshed.

You may feel tired all day… then suddenly wide awake at 2am with a racing mind.  Poor sleep increases cortisol even more, creating a vicious cycle:

stress → poor sleep → more stress → worse sleep.

And without restorative sleep, healing becomes much harder.

6. Anxiety and Feeling “On Edge”

High cortisol and chronic stress can keep your body in a constant state of alert.  This can look like:

  • racing thoughts
  • overwhelm
  • heart palpitations
  • irritability
  • difficulty concentrating
  • feeling “on edge” for no clear reason.

For many women in perimenopause and menopause, fluctuating hormones can make this even worse.

Stress, blood sugar swings, poor sleep, and hormone changes often feed into each other.

Don’t Wait Until Your Body Forces You to Stop

Chronic stress can create chronic dysfunction.

The good news?

There are simple, effective ways to begin reversing the impact.

Bite-Sized Actions to Start Today

1. Listen to Your Body

Don’t soldier on.  If you’re run down or sick, give yourself permission to rest.

Rest is productive.

2. Eat Whole Foods

What you eat matters.  Food is fuel, medicine, and information for your cells.

Focus on:

  • quality protein
  • healthy fats
  • colourful vegetables
  • and stable blood sugar.

3. Prioritise Sleep

Protect your sleep like your health depends on it— because, it does.

Create a calming evening routine and reduce stimulants late in the day.

4. Practice Relaxation

Deep breathing, mindfulness, massage, walking in nature, or a warm bath.

Find what helps your body feel safe enough to switch out of stress mode.

5. Use Herbal Medicine

Herbs can beautifully support:

  • your adrenals
  • nervous system
  • immunity
  • sleep
  • and digestion.

6. Rebuild Nutrients

Stress depletes key nutrients like:

  • magnesium
  • B vitamins
  • zinc
  • and vitamin C.

Targeted supplements may help.

7. Treat Stress Like a Health Condition

Because it is.  Stress deserves your attention, not just when you crash.

Small, consistent steps can help you rebuild resilience.
